Bolsa do Café (Coffee Exchange) / Museu do Café (Coffee Museum), Santos, SP, Brazil – 14 October 2012

Coffee is a very important part of the history of Brazil.  The Coffee Exchange (Bolsa do Café) was the place in Brazil where coffee was traded on an exchange that is very similar to the Chicago Board of Trade where futures in wheat, corn, and other products are traded.  However, the only thing traded on Bolsa do Café was coffee futures.  The exchange opened in this building in 1922, but it has long since closed because coffee futures are mostly traded by computer now.

Coffee played a major part in the early history of Brazil.  It also contributed to the industrialization of Brazil.  Today, about 1/3 of the coffee in the world is produced in Brazil.  Coffee production also played a major part in the reduction of slavery in Brazil.  Millions of immigrants from around the world also came to Brazil to help with the production of coffee in Brazil.

Santos, the largest port in South America, was, and still is, the major shipping point for the shipping of coffee from Brazil to the world.  Many of the activities related to the packaging and shipping of coffee take place in Santos.

Bolsa do Coffee was established to aid in the trading of coffee, and to better set up a means of buying and selling coffee.  The old coffee exchange has been converted to a museum that shows the history of coffee in brazil, the change from slavery to the arrival of millions of immigrants around the world to work in the coffee industry, and the changes that have transpired in the City of Santos.

The museum has a coffee shop with sandwiches, coffee, deserts, and other drinks being offered.  A souvenir shop is also in the museum where one can buy kinds of Brazilian coffee.

It only takes about an hour to go through the museum.  This is a great place to visit to really learn about the important part coffee has played in the history of Brazil, the social impact that coffee had in Brazil, and the part it has played in both the development of the port and city of Santos.

I really think you will find the Bolsa do Café a very interesting place to visit when you are in or around São Paulo, Brazil.

I found this a very interesting place to visit.  I learned more about the history of Brazil, and about coffee production in Brazil, and the important part it played in the development of the country.

If you want to understand where Brazil has been, and where it is going, this should be a must visit for you.
