The government has finally done some right with the roll out of the Mobile Passport app (MPA) available for both the iPhone and Android operating systems. MPA does not replace you passport, of other card (Global Entry, NEXUS, or SENTRY), but it allows you to electronically complete your customs form for quicker processing when you enter the US.
Currently, Mobile Passport only works in 5 cities (Seattle, San Francisco, Chicago, Atlanta, and Miami). Keep checking to find the latest cities where MPA works.
More information on the Mobile Passport app can be found below by clicking your mouse on each of the pictures below. The first picture provides information for U S Customs and Border Protection. The Second provides information about the Mobile Passport app and how to get it for your iPhone or Android Smartphone.
MPA currently only works for citizens of the USA and Canada.
MPA only gets you through immigration faster at an airport. It does not speed you through the Customs lines once you can cleared immigration. To get through both Immigration and Customs fast you need the US CBP Global Entry (GOES) card. A GOES card allows you to bypass the Custom Inspection lines, and exit through the “Diplomats and Airline Crew” exit. With the GOES Card, I typically pass through both Immigration and Customs at JFK, MIN, and DFW.
MPA does not replace your passport. You should be prepared to show your passport. You record you passport number into the app when you configure it. So when you use it after landing and prior to entering Immigration, US CBP has seen your passport # because it is passed to them for review prior to getting your electronic clearance. Note, just because MPA got you a clearance, does not mean you will not be asked for CBP to review your passport.
So the MPA is really great for US Immigration, but to really pass through all lines fast you need both the MPA and GOES Card.
