We were fishing near Isla Carmen off Loreto, Baja California Sur, Mexico yesterday, and saw several different sea mammals while we were fishing. There are many trips you can get in Loreto, but there is no guarantee that you will see any wildlife on your tour. We were lucky and saw a whale, purposes, and sea lions while on a fishing trip. This blog post will discuss the wildlife we saw on our fishing trip.
We were generally 15 to 20 miles to the northeast of Loreto, and on the north side and northwest of Isla Carmen yesterday morning. A map of the general areas we visited yesterday is shown below.
We saw the whale and proposes in the area circled in red to the northwest of Isla Carmen. The sea lions were seen on shore and basking in the sun just offshore on the north side of Isla Carmen.
Whale Siting
I only saw one whale that surfaced to breath during the day. Our fishing guide, Jorge, saw several whales. My friend Chuck saw one whale also. This fishing trip was in the last part of September 2013 which is not the best time of year for whale watching. I understand that the months of January and February are the best months for whale watching in the Gulf of California.
Porpoise Sightings
We saw porpoises of several occasions yesterday. The porpoises would follow us while we were cruising from one fishing area to another area. They were seen on both sides of the boat, and would follow us like they were playing with. On a few occasions they would broach, and I managed to get the two pictures below. Again, we were lucky to see the porpoises. There is no guarantee that you will see porpoise on a tour, but in general I would say that your chances are very good.
Watching Sea Lions on the north side of Isla Carmen
While fishing we could hear sea lions barking in the distance. As we began our change from one fishing area to another, our fishing guide, Jorge, took us near the shore on the very north side of Isla Carmen. Below are several pictures as we cruised very close to the sea lions.
As we got closer to the sea lion colony we could see many of them basking in the sun with their fins out of the water. It was very hot yesterday so it was easy to see why the sea lions were enjoying the calm water and soaking up the sun.
Guide for Fishing and Nature Tours
